Wills Month
September is Wills Month
We can help you leave a gift that grows beyond your lifetime

Add Hawke’s Bay Foundation to your Will this month and leave a lasting legacy to support the causes close to your heart – forever!
Unlike a one-off donation to a specific charity, gifts given through Hawke’s Bay Foundation are invested in perpetuity, generating income that is distributed annually to community organisations in the region. This means that a gift from a generous donor will continue to give back to the community, year after year.
CREATE AN IMPACT that will ripple for generations
A legacy in your Will can create a ripple of positive change in your community for generations to come. This Wills Month, we invite you to think about the legacy you want to leave behind.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, since Hawke’s Bay Foundation was established in 2012, we have distributed over $3 million to communities throughout Hawke’s Bay.
This funding has supported hundreds of charitable organisations that are vital to our region’s wellbeing. We currently have just over $13 million in funds under management, meaning we will continue to give back to our community, year after year.

Pledge to help Hawke's Bay dementia sufferers
Diana and David Etheridge, after a suggestion from one of their daughters, have jointly agreed to leave a bequest in their wills to Hawke’s Bay Foundation, to support dementia sufferers and end-of-life care in perpetuity.
“The concept is a very good vehicle for people who wish to support communities and their interests after they’ve gone.”
HOW DOES OUR SMARTER GIVING MODEL WORK?
A unique way to give
Unlike other charitable giving, your gift will go on growing and giving, year after year.

Creating a Will
Wills Month is a timely reminder of the importance of having a will. A will ensures your wishes are respected and your loved ones are cared for. But have you considered the lasting impact you could make by including a gift to a cause close to your heart?
A legacy gift in your Will through Hawke’s Bay Foundation can create a ripple of positive change in your community for generations to come. Leaving donations or bequests as gifts is a wonderful way to ensure your legacy lasts long after you pass.
Key points for Will making:
- Have a lawyer write up your Will and ensure you are well informed of your options
- Ensure you know which assets fall into part of your estate and which may not
- Consider how you want to care for family and friends after you have gone
- Discuss with your lawyer which endowment funds are available to best support a cause care about
- Consider the option of setting up your own endowment fund
- Ensure the Will you draft revokes any earlier Wills you have made
- Talk with your family about your decisions
Beyond the Family Tree
Although most wills provide for immediate family, New Zealanders are also increasingly choosing charitable gifts in their wills, says Alesha Hope, Hawke’s Bay Foundation’s Executive Officer.
“I think for Kiwis, the word ‘bequest’ can conjure images of privilege and wealth,” she says. “But even for those of more moderate means, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond a generation or two is becoming more commonplace.”
WHY WOULD I GIVE?

Because your giving stays local.
Unless you specify otherwise, your giving will stay right here in Hawke’s Bay and be felt locally by generations to come. Our administration costs will never exceed more than 1% of our fund value, so you can be assured that your gift is directly benefiting those that need it the most.

Because it’s forever, and it counts.
Your gift will be safeguarded for the long term and only the income it creates will be given out to the community. This means that in 10, 50 or 100 years time, your gift will still be generating income to support the community of Hawke’s Bay.

Because it has real impact.
Have you ever given money wondering what it will actually be used for and whether it will make any real difference? The power of Hawke’s Bay Foundation is that it pools our charitable giving together to create real scale and then places those funds where they will have the greatest possible impact.

Because it’s a ‘one stop giving shop’.
Through one gift, you can support multiple causes all of which directly benefit Hawke’s Bay. You can direct your giving to areas you care about, or you can leave it in the hands of the Foundation’s trustees to put the funds to work where they believe it will do the most good.

Because it’s a safe pair of hands.
With reputable, skilled and experienced trustees, a trust deed that provides for appointment of trustees by key community leaders and robust granting and investment policies, your gift is in safe hands.
